The 'Ceramica 2024' Demonstration Weekend
From July 26th to 28th, 2024, South Wales Potters (SWP) proudly presents the next instalment of the 'Ceramica' weekends, a hallmark event within the SWP calendar. Held alternately with the International Ceramic Festival, 'Ceramica' has been a pivotal gathering for many years.
This year, we are thrilled to announce our distinguished demonstrators, Susan O’Byrne from Scotland and Ireland and Niek Hoogland from the Netherlands—both globally renowned ceramicists.
The 'Ceramica' weekend provides members with a unique opportunity to connect, fully immerse themselves in ceramics, engage in conversations with fellow members, and witness the expertise of the demonstrators. Attendees can also participate in hands-on sessions facilitated by the demonstrators.
In contrast to the International Ceramic Festival (ICF), the 'Ceramica' weekend offers an intimate atmosphere, allowing for a deeper engagement with the two demonstrators. They work collaboratively, providing numerous opportunities for the audience to ask questions and engage in discussions, resulting in an enriching and entertaining experience.
In recent years, we have chosen the Cyncoed site of Cardiff Metropolitan University as our venue, and it has proven to be exceptional for our requirements.
Located on the outskirts of Cardiff, it is easily accessible from the M4 and via public transport from the city centre. Ample parking is available, with a small parking fee.
Overnight stays feature comfortable and contemporary en-suite student rooms arranged in flats, each comprising 11 rooms and a communal kitchen ideal for drinks and snacks. Utensils and crockery are not provided, so we kindly ask you to bring your cup or mug. Tea, coffee, and semi-skimmed milk will be available in each kitchen.
All meals and refreshments will be served in the dining room of the main building. Meals are self-service with diverse dishes, accommodating various dietary preferences (please refer to the application form). Breakfast boasts a variety of options, including a full-cooked breakfast. Lunch and dinner consist of two courses with several choices. Morning and afternoon refreshments are also included.
These dining offerings are based on the full residential package, while day options will feature appropriate meals.
While the full residential package is the optimal way to enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with members and demonstrators, we also offer non-residential day tickets.
Our series of engaging demonstrations and workshops are scheduled to take place in the spacious science lab located on the first floor, accessible by both stairs and a lift. The ample space ensures that everyone can enjoy a clear view of the proceedings.
Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon have been reserved for immersive hands-on activities, guided by our expert demonstrators.
Further details about these activities will be provided closer to the event date.

Our Ceramica demonstrators are bringing their unique creations for purchase during the event. Payment details will be provided later.
In our effort to keep the 'Ceramica' weekend affordable, we often face financial challenges. Therefore, we encourage delegates to consider voluntarily contributing by bringing along a piece of their pottery, such as a mug, bowl, or any other pottery item, to sell. This will help raise funds and is entirely optional.
You're invited to bring any unwanted pottery books or other books, including paperbacks, to contribute to our fundraising efforts for 'Ceramica'.
