Lansdown Pottery is run by John and Penny West. It is situated in the centre of Stroud, Gloucestershire, in the former Victorian art college, which it shares with other art and educational organisations.
John began pottery in 1981 and is largely self-taught. He completed the PDC Studio Ceramics Course at the Royal Forest of Dean College as well as working with other potters. Penny was formerly a weaver, spinner & dyer, working with young adults with Learning Difficulties and has been potting for 8 years.
Work is mainly gas fired, reduction stoneware, with a strong emphasis towards function. There is a very strong wish to begin soda very soon. Influences range from Oriental to the wood-fired pottery of La Borne.
As a working pottery, Lansdown Pottery is also a facility for the local community, offering classes to the public, training and work experience for young people.
