Jason Braham, who has been making pots since 1972, had a studio in south Herefordshire for twenty years. In 2003 he crossed the border into Radnorshire and established a new pottery at Dolau. In the summer of 2007 he gave up his career as a teacher to work full time as a potter.
His pots are once-fired in an oil and wood fuelled salt kiln. He draws inspiration from the country pottery of Europe, fusing the traditions of slipware and salt glaze in pots that are for daily use.
“I like pots that look as if they’ve always been here, but which retain the freshness of the moment they were thrown. I like pots that are generous, which invite touch and which are complemented by good food and drink. I like essentially simple slips and glazes and I favour cut, wiped or trailed decoration applied at an early stage in the making process. I put myself through a fair bit of anguish by “once-firing” over twenty-four hours but I think it suits the work and accords with the spirit in which it’s made.”
