South Wales Potters

Christine Gittins

South African born and educated, I settled in Wales in 1994. Although a trained graphic artist, my involvement with clay has occupied my life since 1982 when I first started evening classes in pottery .

My work is all wheel thrown earthenware clay.

I put form above function and base my shapes on the timeless classical forms used in past civilizations. The rounded forms used traditionally in Africa as containers are a particularly inspirational shape.

I burnish my pots to a smooth finish and after an initial bisque firing, smoke or fire them in a saggar containing salt, copper and sawdust.

The decoration is thus done by the flames, leaving their random marks on the surface of the pots.

The effects are my own interpretation of those created by the bonfire methods used in Africa and other primitive societies
